Getting a dental crown can restore your tooth’s function and appearance, giving you back your smile. However, you will need to care for it once the treatment is over. But what exactly are you supposed to do? The good news is that recovery from getting a dental crown is usually smooth and straightforward. Still, you may need some help. Continue reading to find a few great tips for recovering quickly and getting the best results from your crown.

1. Manage Your Pain

Right after getting your crown, your mouth may feel a little sore, and the tooth may be sensitive to hot or cold foods. This is normal! Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help ease discomfort, but you’ll still need to watch your habits. For example, be gentle when chewing on the side of your mouth where the crown was placed. This is especially important during the first 24 hours as the crown is settling.

2. Watch What You Eat

For the first day or so, stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, and fruit puree. These meals will give you the nutrition you need without irritating the area around your crown or dislodging it. Also, it’s also a good idea to avoid very hot or cold foods like steamy soup or ice cream until your sensitivity improves.

3. Stay on Top of Your Oral Care

Caring for your dental crown is just like caring for your natural teeth. Brush twice a day, floss regularly, and use mouthwash to keep your crown and the surrounding gums clean. However, try to floss around your crown gently, and avoid pulling up too hard on the floss to prevent popping it off.

4. Be Vigilant for Problems

Dental crowns are a common procedure, but unforeseen issues can pop up if you’re not paying attention. Take note of the way your crown feels in your mouth throughout the day. Is it hitting your other teeth uncomfortably? Is there pain persistent or severe pain? Do you notice any strange swelling? If you notice anything out of the ordinary, it’s important to call your dentist to prevent further discomfort or more serious dental issues over time.

5. Attend Follow-Up Visits

Your dentist may schedule a follow-up visit to check your crown and make sure there are no issues. Don’t skip this appointment! It’s your opportunity to ask questions you may have or bring up any problems you’ve been experiencing. Chances are that your dentist will even fix them then and there!

With proper care, your dental crown can last for many years and provide you with a healthy smile. Following these tips will help you recover quickly and enjoy the many benefits of your new crown!
