Are Dentures Still an Option Following Years of Tooth Loss?

Dentures are a tried-and-true form of tooth replacement that has assisted countless generations of patients over the years, and if you have missing teeth, you might be considering this reliable solution. However, if you’ve been without some (or all) of your teeth for a while, you’ve likely suffered some degree of bone loss in your jaw – which might have you worried about if you’re still able to receive dentures. Here’s more about this issue and why dentures are often able to help!

What Happens to the Jaw When Teeth Are Missing?

When teeth are missing, the jawbone in the affected areas can begin to deteriorate and shrink, generally over the course of several months or years if left unaddressed. This process is called bone resorption, and it’s due to the lack of stimulation from the tooth roots. This doesn’t occur when you have all your teeth; as you bite and chew, the resulting pressure travels down through their roots and into your jaw, encouraging the bone tissue to grow and remain strong. If you have only one or two teeth missing, you may not even notice the change. However, if you’re missing all of your teeth, this can make your jawbone significantly weaker, even leading to facial collapse.

Are Dentures Still an Option Following Bone Resorption?

If you’re hoping to rebuild your smile after years of tooth loss that has led to bone resorption, you might be concerned that dentures could cause further harm, or that they might not be a viable option in general. If dentures are worn consistently and properly, you should not experience bone loss from wearing them; in fact, wearing dentures can actually make a noticeable difference when it comes to avoiding further bone loss since they provide a small amount of stimulation to the gums and jawbones. While this isn’t anywhere near the amount provided by natural tooth roots, it’s better than the entire lack of stimulation your jaw would receive without any teeth whatsoever!

How Can I Maintain Dentures?

While they won’t completely prevent bone loss, if you’re proactive with how you use your dentures and maintain them properly, they can still serve you well for many years and help your jaw. Be sure you’re keeping them clean by rinsing them after meals and removing them to soak them at night. Also be sure they always fit properly; if they don’t, they won’t provide your jaw with any stimulation. As soon as you notice that your dentures are slipping or not fitting snugly against your gums, let your dentist know. When they fit correctly, every time you bite, clench, chew, and so on, you’re giving your jaw a little of the stimulation it needs to remain healthy!
